This November, Southwestern Advantage Foundation continued its annual tradition of supporting Latvia’s active students through the Entrepreneurial Youth Scholarship, organized in collaboration with the University of Latvia Foundation (LU Fonds).
The scholarship was created to support and recognize proactive young leaders dedicated to self-development and creating a positive impact on those around them — qualities that reflect the values and mission of Southwestern Advantage.
A Day of Inspiration and Connection
The Entrepreneurship and Leadership Seminar, held in Riga on November 1st, 2025, gathered top applicants for a day filled with learning and inspiration.
During the event, Southwestern Advantage leaders Madara Brauere, Kristaps Kaza, and Kristaps Zakulis shared insights on entrepreneurship, communication, and leadership — offering participants not only valuable knowledge but also a space to connect with other driven young people.
Although only one scholarship is awarded each year, the seminar is designed to ensure every attendee leaves with new ideas, contacts, and motivation.

Celebrating This Year’s Winner: Betija Butkus
After a close selection process by the scholarship committee and participant voting, the 2025 Entrepreneurial Youth Scholarship was awarded to Betija Butkus, a student at the University of Latvia’s Primary Education Teacher program.
Betija’s story is one of initiative, leadership, and purpose. Even before her university studies, she distinguished herself through participation in educational projects and national competitions — earning 4th place in “Bizness 24h,” a Latvian entrepreneurship contest, and 8th place in “BIO-GO-Higher,” an academic challenge focused on innovation and science.
Her passion for guiding and empowering others is evident through her work as a mentor in the “Future Leaders Sigulda” program, as well as in the University of Latvia Mentorship Program. In high school, she founded a student company and organized a charity event at an orphanage, reflecting her genuine desire to contribute to her community.
“For me, philanthropy is not just financial support — it’s also about believing in someone. Knowing that someone believes in my potential gives me strength and motivation to continue growing,” Betija wrote in her essay.
Betija aims to become a motivating and creative teacher who inspires students toward self-growth and leadership — contributing meaningfully to the future of education in Latvia. Her vision perfectly embodies the spirit of the Entrepreneurial Youth Scholarship: empowering students who strive not only to achieve but also to uplift others.

The scholarship committee also recognized several other outstanding finalists for their entrepreneurial spirit and leadership potential:
-
Marija Elizabete Šneidere – 2nd place
-
Markus Popkovs and Alise Kristīne Egle – shared 3rd place
Each of them demonstrated initiative and creativity, showcasing the exceptional potential among Latvia’s young leaders.
Every year, this scholarship reminds us that leadership begins with initiative and service. Southwestern Advantage is proud to support students like Betija, who embody the entrepreneurial and compassionate spirit that drives positive change in their communities.
